That's David Ruman. My dad. The David from the book.
He's been a furnace repair man for over fifty years. He's fixed thousands of furnaces. He's crawled under more houses than I can count. He's shown up at 3AM when families had no heat and it was twenty below outside. And yes, he really does make up fake rebate programs so people don't have to pay.
A lot of the stories in The Five Doors are true. The wooden crosses. The jail ministry. The furnace calls. The way he loves my mom.
I also made a lot of it up. I don't actually know what Heaven looks like. I don't know if there's a Window or five doors or angels with battle scars. That part is imagination.
But here's what I want you to know: this story isn't really about my dad.
It's about you. It's about your dad. Your mom. Your grandfather who never missed a Sunday. Your neighbor who mows the widow's lawn without being asked. It's about every ordinary person who ever wondered if any of it mattered.
My dad just happens to be the one I wrote it for.
Oh, and Janet? That's her in the picture. My mom. Fifty-plus years of marriage, still going strong.
